Hillcrest Excavations was honoured to be chosen by the Blue Mountains City Council to spearhead the de-commissioning of the historic 600 meter Lapstone steam train tunnel. This iconic landmark, a testament to our rich local heritage, has been revitalised to provide safe and enjoyable pedestrian access for the community. Our project management included comprehensive demolition, precise excavation, and sustainable practices to preserve the environment while making this treasured site accessible once again.
Key Achievements
- Demolition & Precise Excavation:
- Carried out meticulous demolition and excavation work to ensure structural integrity, in the heritage-listed internal walls, while preparing the tunnel for pedestrian use. Using Hillcrest’s rock saw with concrete blade to fault lines to allow the rock breaking to take place without risk to heritage marked rocks with WWII insignia
- Environmentally Conscious Approach:
- Implemented environmentally friendly techniques to minimise impact, including sediment control and erosion prevention, preserving the surrounding area’s natural beauty.
- Local Knowledge & Expertise:
- Leveraged our deep understanding of the Blue Mountains region to navigate the unique challenges of this historic site, dewatering the 50 year sediment that prevented access, ensuring the project’s success.
